Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Find quick answers to the most common questions about spred — from ingredients and garlic strengths to storage, refills, allergens and cooking tips.
What is spred?
spred is a plant-based garlic spread made with fresh cold-stoneground garlic. It comes in three strengths (20%, 40%, 60%) and is used for garlic bread, pasta, roast potatoes, marinades and everyday cooking.
How does the spred dispenser work?
The twist-up dispenser holds your garlic spread and lets you push it upwards with a simple twist. Instead of buying another plastic tub, you reuse the dispenser and insert cardboard refill tubes.

What are the spred refill tubes made of?
Refills are made from cardboard tubes with cardboard lids. They use minimal food-safe coating and avoid the thick plastic linings found in most food tubes. A little natural oil seepage can occur — this is normal.
Are the refills plastic-free?
The cardboard tubes and lids contain little to no plastic. They are designed to be low-waste, recyclable where permitted, and significantly more sustainable than plastic tubs or squeeze tubes.
Are all spred products vegan?
Yes. All strengths — 20%, 40% and 60% — are 100% plant-based, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free.

What’s the difference between 20%, 40% and 60% garlic strengths?
- 20% — mild & buttery, still 2× stronger than supermarket garlic butter
- 40% — balanced everyday garlic (4–8× supermarket garlic levels)
- 60% — bold, intense garlic for marinades, roasting & garlic lovers

Is spred stronger than supermarket garlic butter?
Yes. Most garlic butters and spreads contain less than 10% garlic. spred starts at 20% — and goes up to 60% — giving 2–6× more garlic.
Can I use spred instead of minced garlic?
Absolutely. spred is one of the easiest minced garlic substitutes.
Conversion guide:
1 teaspoon of spred 60% ≈ 1 garlic clove.
Does spred burn like raw garlic?
No. Because spred contains natural oils, it is much more forgiving than raw garlic and doesn’t scorch as easily in hot pans.
How should I store spred?
- Keep chilled between 0°C and 8°C
- Once opened, use within 28 days
- Refills are suitable for freezing (do not refreeze once thawed)
Is spred suitable for children?
Yes — especially the 20% strength, which is mild and family-friendly.
Is spred gluten-free?
Yes — all strengths are completely gluten-free.
Is spred nut-free?
Yes — spred does not contain nuts. It contains sunflower lecithin and faba bean preparation.
How long does a refill last?
Each 45g refill contains roughly 4 servings, depending on how generous you are.
Can I recycle the cardboard tubes?
Yes, where local facilities accept paper-based food packaging. Any minimal coating is designed to be low-impact.
